Alzheimers Disease Prevention Print E-mail

ImageAlzheimer's disease prevention is important to think about when you are still young and have no memory loss. There are many developments in the disease today. Primarily, these involve prevention of Alzheimer's disease, in the first place.

An Alzheimer's disease fact is that it is the most common form of dementia and one in every 10 Americans, over the age of 65 can be effected .  Alzheimer's disease is a progressive disease, which advances in stages from mild memory loss to the loss of many mental abilities as well.  The time from first symptom until death can range anywhere from three to twenty years.

What causes Alzheimer's disease?
Abnormal plaques comprised of the brain protein called beta develop in the spaces between nerve cells and limit the communication between cells leading to a decrease of the brain functioning.  In addition , another protein which channels the chemical messages inside nerve cells will deform and tangle.  That would eventually lead to the loss of nerve cells in the brain.

Although, there is no known cure for Alzheimer's disease, there is growing evidence that it can be reversed, or slowed if treated early.  Researchers are studying the possibilities that many people may be able to reduce the risk of developing the disease.  They are also looking for ways to delay the onset of the Alzheimer's disease.
Studies have shown that that taking vitamin E and other antioxidants may help to slow down Alzheimer's disease.  Increasing the intake of folic acid and vitamin B6 and B12 will also help if a person has increased levels of homocysteine levels.  Homocysteines, the result of improper metabolic breakdown of  certain amino acids can cause brain cell destruction.

Adding omega3, GLA, and other essential fatty acids to the diet has been shown to boost mental capacity. The supplemant DHA, a long chained fatty acid was shown , in a European study, to reverse early Alzheimer's. That is not surprising because DHA, is part of a phospholipid, which makes up brain cells.

Taking a daily dose of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug such as indomethacin, ibuprofen, and naproxen sodium, has been shown to lower inflamation, that could affect the brain   Although statins, pills to lower cholesterol are also said to help reduce chances of Alzheimer's disease, there is no evidence of this, to date.
Many researchers say that making lifestyle changes is also an important factor in keeping Alzheimer's disease away.  They say that exercise is very important and will keep your body strong and able to fight off the disease.

One surprising thing, shown to be effective in  Alzheimer's disease prevention is use of the mind. When it comes to brain health, it's definately, "Use it or lose it". A research study followed a group of seniors for almost 10 years. The group, who continued attending classes, including learning new languages, was found to have significantly less brain deteriorization, than the control group.

Do not drink a lot of alcohol or smoke cigarettes.  This is going to fill your body full of toxins that are not only dangerous to getting Alzheimer's disease as well as many other problems in life.  Keeping your body as healthy as possible is very important to fighting off any type of disease as well as keeping your mental health in good shape.
There is no absolutelguarantee to keep Alzheimer's disease away. However, by following the above recommendations, a person can keep both their physical and their mental health in optimal shape, protecting against diseases like Alzheimer's.  It is never too early to start Alzheimer's disease prevention.
If a person is diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease, there are forms of medicines that can help patients live out their lives better and more easily.  These drugs at least can improve quality of life, which is important, in making a difficult challenge as stress free as possible.
